E. Oldroyd & Sons Ltd

E. Oldroyd & Sons Ltd is one of eleven traditional rhubarb producers located in the Yorkshire Rhubarb Triangle between Leeds, Wakefield and Bradford. Between them they produce 1,500 tonnes of Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb each year.

A reduction in the number of days of frost over recent years, combined with other changes to the weather (wet summers, drought and warm autumns) has meant that growing conditions have been less than ideal. As a consequence there has been a reduction in yield in early varieties of over 25% and a delay to the start of production.

The growers are having to experiment with new varieties and consider alternative options, like refrigeration, in order to adapt to the changing circumstances.
